🥄 Equipment
Which air fryer? I use the Ninja Foodi 5.8 litre Grill and Air Fryer with 4 customisable cooking functions including air fry, roast, bake, and dehydrate!
What is an air fryer?
Air fryers are small(ish) kitchen appliances that operate like a convection oven—except in a smaller, more concentrated space.
The air is circulated at a high temperature and evenly around the food, which makes the food cook more quickly than in a conventional oven (saving energy), and helps give foods a crispy coating without the need for lots of oil and fat.
🔪 Instructions

Cooking sausage rolls in a Ninja air fryer is really easy!
One: Cut the puff pastry sheet into 3 equal horizontal slices.
Two: Mix together the sausage meat and apple sauce and equally distribute it into the middle of each puff pastry slice.
Three: Whisk the egg in a small bowl and brush the egg wash along the bottom of each piece of puff pastry with a pastry brush, then fold the top over to meet the bottom, encasing the sausage meat inside.
Four: Use a fork to seal the edges together then cut each sausage roll into 8 smaller ones, so you end up with 24 mini sausage rolls in total.
Five: Use a sharp knife to cut a small slit in the top of each sausage roll and brush with egg wash.
Six: Place the sausage rolls in the air fryer basket and air fry for 10-12 minutes (larger sausage rolls will need longer) until the pastry is golden and crispy. Use a meat thermometer to make sure the centres of the sausage rolls have reached 75C (you only need to test one).
Seven: Cool on a wire rack for 5 - 10 minutes before serving.

💭 Expert tips
- Preheat your air fryer before baking the sausage rolls. This will help the pastry become crisp and flakey.
- Allow the puff pastry to rest at room temperature for 20 minutes before using it. If it’s too cold, it will break easily when unrolled.
- Thoroughly brush each sausage roll in egg wash so they have an even golden colour when baked.
- Make sure the sausage rolls are in a single layer in your air fryer. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to air fry them in 2 batches.
🍴 Serving suggestions
The sausage rolls are great for popping into lunchboxes or taking on picnics. Why not make a double batch for a buffet, party or large Christmas gathering?
They're also great for Afternoon Tea, alongside other bitesize treats such as mini cucumber sandwiches, chocolate tiffin, and fruit scones.
Why not make 2 giant sausage rolls or a sausage plait to serve with baked beans and air fryer chips or cheesy chips for an easy lunch?

📖 Variations
- Replace the apple sauce with caramelised onion chutney for a richer flavour.
- Add a small handful of grated cheese (cheddar is best, but hard mozzarella would also work) to make sausage and cheese rolls.
- Stir 1 teaspoon of wholegrain mustard or dijon mustard into the sausage meat for added flavour.
- Add a sprinkling of poppy seeds to the top of each sausage roll, after they have been glazed with egg wash.
- Make them vegetarian by using the filling from veggie sausages.
- At Christmas add dried cranberries and crumbled chestnuts.
- Use shortcrust pastry instead of puff pastry. Follow my recipe for shortcrust pastry sausage rolls and air fry for 10-12 minutes instead of oven-baking.
🥡 Storage
Store: The cooked sausage rolls can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Reheat: The mini sausage rolls can be served cold, at room temperature, or hot. Reheat in the air fryer or oven for a few minutes.
Freeze: The sausage rolls can be frozen unbaked or baked for up to 3 months. If freezing unbaked there is no need to defrost them before air frying. Just pop them straight into the air fryer and add a few minutes to the cooking time.

❓ Frequently asked questions

I had two sausages left over from sausage and mash so used these to make sausage rolls but I then had some puff pastry left over so made a filling out of raw potato and cheese, egg washed them and put them in my Salter 2.5 ltr (going to get a bigger one)I have had this one for 3 years but because of helpful people like you Beth I am using it a lot more now,and honestly there is nothing you cannot cook in them.Last night I put in two chicken portions with an Aunt Bessies Jacket spud ,dinner is served ,temp. probe of chicken was 8o'c.Also bought a slow cooker and had beef stew with dumplings tonight, cooking is fun finding out new things.

Also Beth, my Salter when on has warm air coming from the back so I put a plate behind it and it keeps it nice and warm.
