If you love crispy golden chips but don't want to deal with hot oil, then an air fryer is the perfect solution.
Air fryers use hot air to cook food with little to no oil, resulting in chips that are delicious and healthier than deep-fried versions. With an air fryer, you can enjoy homemade chips without all the mess and fuss of traditional chip pan frying.
I like to use my crinkle cutter potato chipper to cut homemade chips, but if you haven't got one, just use a sharp knife.
There's also no need to soak or parboil the potatoes. You can even leave the skin on if you want to!

🛒 Ingredient notes
Potatoes - use a floury potato like Maris Piper or King Edward. They make the best-textured chips with crispy edges and fluffy middles.
Spray Oil - an olive oil spray or fry light spray for healthier air fryer chips. But, if you don't mind the calories, use regular olive oil. You'll need about ½ a tablespoon of olive oil per potato, as a rough guide.
Salt - for seasoning.
🥄 Equipment
Which air fryer? I use the Ninja Foodi 5.8 litre Grill and Air Fryer with 4 customisable cooking functions including air fry, roast, bake, and dehydrate!
A crinkle cutter potato chipper is useful if you want to make crinkle-cut chips. Otherwise, a sharp knife will do.

Three: Once the chips are dry, spray them with the fry light, olive oil spray, or coat thoroughly in olive oil. Season with salt.
Four: Place the chips in the air fryer basket and cook at 200°C (400°F) for 20-25 minutes until golden and crispy. Shake every 5 minutes. Season with more salt before serving.
Top Tips
- Leave the skin on for more rustic-looking chips. Make sure you scrub the skins first to remove any dirt.
- Ensure the chips are cut roughly to the same size so they all cook evenly in the air fryer.
- After rinsing, make sure the chips are thoroughly dry before air frying, otherwise, they will steam and go soggy!
- Preheat your air fryer before cooking.
- Don't overfill the air fryer basket. It's best if the chips are in a single layer. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to air fry them in two batches.
- Shaking the chips every 5 minutes allows all sides to become crispy and golden.
🍴 Serving suggestions
Fish, chips, and mushy peas is a British classic. Another one of our favourite chip meals is ham, egg, and chips (with lots of ketchup).
We also enjoy these homemade air fryer chips with air fryer chicken nuggets, air fryer chicken katsu, lasagne, air fryer whole chicken, slow cooker Hunter's chicken, meat feast pizza, and chicken tacos.
📖 Variations
- Change the seasonings! Paprika, garlic powder, curry powder, and Cajun seasoning all work well.
- Make sweet potato fries or parsnip chips instead!
- Make cheesy chips (they're so good).
- Cook frozen French fries in your air fryer for an ultra-quick snack.
🥡 Storage
Store - Air fryer chips are best eaten fresh. They can go soggy if left too long. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge and reheat them in the air fryer for 3-4 minutes at 200 °C to allow them to crisp up.
Freeze: Not suitable for freezing.
❓ Frequently asked questions
No, there is no need to parboil chips before air frying, but they can make the chips even fluffier! If you have time, parboil for 3-4 minutes, drain, and then thoroughly dry before air frying
Yes! You won't need to add any extra oil as they will have already been coated in oil. Simply place them in the air fryer basket and air fry at 200C (400F) for 5-7 minutes less than stated on the packet for oven-baking. Shake them every 5 minutes to ensure they cook evenly.
Yes, you can make them without oil, but they will be a lot drier. If you are trying to save calories, just give them a few sprays of fry light before air frying.
You most likely didn't dry them enough after rinsing them in cold water. They must be completely dry before spraying/coating in oil and air frying.
Cooking times for chips in an air fryer can vary depending on a few factors, including whether they are homemade chips or frozen chips, the thickness of the chips, and the brand and model of your air fryer. It may take a bit of experimentation to find the perfect cooking time and temperature for your specific setup.
