    🛒 Ingredient notes

Ingredients for air fryer baked apples.

Which apples are best for air fryer baked apples?

I like to use tart eating apples. Granny Smith, Braeburn, or Pink Lady varieties all work well.

    Butter - unsalted and melted.

Cinnamon - ¼ teaspoon. You could also use mixed spice.

    For the crumble topping:

Oats - old-fashioned rolled oats are best, but quick cook oats would also work.

    Butter - unsalted and melted.

Honey - a light runny honey or swap for maple syrup.

Brown Sugar - I like to use light muscavado sugar, but you could also use dark brown sugar.

Cinnamon - a teaspoon of cinnamon for the cumble topping.

Flour - a small amount of plain flour helps to bind the crumble topping ingredients together.

🔪 How to make baked apples in air fryer

The recipe card with ingredient quantities and detailed instructions can be found at the bottom of the post

One: To make the oat crumble topping, mix together the oats, melted butter, honey, light brown sugar, cinnamon, and plain flour in a mixing bowl.

Two: Cut the apples in half through the stem, then core them and remove the seeds.

Three: Brush melted butter over the cut sides of the apples with a pastry brush, then sprinkle with the ground cinnamon.

Four: Spoon over the oat crumble topping, compacting it down with the back of a spoon so it doesn't fall off.

Five: Carefully place the apples in the air fryer basket and air fry at 180°C (350°F) for 12-15 minutes until the apple is tender and the crumble is golden brown. Start testing the apples after 10 minutes.

    Top Tips

    • You can cook the apples in the oven if you don't have an air fryer - 180°C (350°F) for 20 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden and crisp.
    • You can use any apple, but try to use fresh firm ones that won't disintegrate while cooking.
    • If you find that the top is getting too brown, cover the top with foil. Foil is completely safe to use in an air fryer.
    • Make the apples in your instant pot instead!

    🍴 Serving suggestions

Serve the air fryer baked apples for dessert with cream, custard, salted caramel sauce, vanilla ice cream, or honeycomb ice cream.

They're also nice for a weekend breakfast with creme fraiche or yogurt and fresh berries (raspberries or blueberries go well).

    📖 Variations

    • Make healthy baked apples and leave out the brown sugar from the topping.
    • Swap the oats for crushed cornflakes or granola.
    • Use ground almonds instead of plain flour.
    • Add a pinch of nutmeg as well as the cinnamon.
    • Add chopped nuts to the crumble topping. Pecan nuts or walnuts would both work well.

    🥡 Storage

Store - Store leftover baked apples in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Reheat - In the air fryer for 3-4 minutes, or in a hot oven.

Freeze - The air fryer baked apples are not suitable for freezing due to their high moisture content.

    ❓ Frequently asked questions

Are baked apples good for you?

Baked apples are good for you, but they do contain some natural sugars. The oat crumble topping in this recipe does contain fat and refined sugar, so to make these baked apples even healthier, leave off the crumble topping!

Should I peel the apples before baking?

The peel should be left on the apples as it helps to hold them together whilst baking. If you don't like the skin, remove it after they have been baked.
