- Homemade apple sauce always tastes better than shop-bought!
- You can make a large batch and freeze some for another time.
🛒 Ingredient notes
Apples - I like to use Bramley apples, but you can use other cooking apples or tart eating apples such as Granny Smith.
Caster Sugar - to counter the sourness of the apples. Swap for honey or maple syrup if you prefer, but use half the amount.
Cider Vinegar - helps lift the flavour of the sauce. Lemon juice can also be used.
Butter - ensures a creamy smooth finish. Leave the butter out to reduce the calories, and replace with 2 tablespoons of water.
🔪 How to make easy homemade applesauce
The recipe card with ingredient quantities and detailed instructions can be found at the bottom of the post
One: Place the chopped apples, butter, caster sugar, and cider vinegar in a large lidded saucepan.
Two: Cook on a low heat (with the lid on) for 10-15 minutes until the apples are soft. Stir occasionally
Three: Mix with a wooden spoon until you reach your desired consistency. We like it quite smooth, but leave it chunkier if you like.
Top Tips
- Peel the apples for a smooth sauce, or leave the skin on for a chunkier textured sauce.
- For a really smooth sauce, blitz with a stick blender.
- If you are eating apples, there is no need to add sugar.
- Apple sauce can be used as an egg substitute in baked goods.
🍴 Serving suggestions
Serve the apple sauce as a condiment with cooked meats such as roast pork, goose, gammon, and sausages.
The apple sauce can also be stirred through yogurt or porridge, dolloped on pancakes, or used in baked goods such as muffins.
It's great with vanilla ice cream, or stirred through rice pudding, for a quick and easy dessert!
📖 Variations
- Try different flavourings. Cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg all work well with apples.
- Use maple syrup or honey to sweeten the sauce rather than sugar.
- Swap the cider vinegar for freshly squeezed lemon juice.
🥡 Storage
Store - The apple sauce can be stored in an airtight container or sterilised jar in the fridge for up to a week.
Freeze - The sauce can be frozen for up to 3 months.
❓ Frequently asked questions
Apple sauce is a purée or mash made from cooked apples and other ingredients such as sugar, butter, and/or water. The texture of the sauce can range from chunky to smooth.
Peeling is optional. Some prefer to peel for a smoother texture, but leaving the skin on can retain more nutritional content.
Bramley apples are commonly recommended for their tangy flavour and smooth texture when cooked. However, you can experiment with other varieties based on preference.
If your sauce is too thin, simmer it uncovered on low heat to reduce the liquid content until it reaches the desired consistency.
