    2. Giving the traditional apple crumble a Biscoff twist not only adds a burst of flavour but also brings a modern, trendy spin to a beloved classic.

    🛒 Ingredient notes

Ingredients for Biscoff apple crumble bars.

    For the oat crumble:

Oats - use porridge oats or rolled oats (jumbo oats or quick cook aren't suitable for this recipe).

Flour - plain white flour or use wholemeal plain flour for a healthier twist.

Butter - a block (250g) of unsalted butter. The butter must be chilled and cubed.

Sugar - light brown sugar or light muscovado sugar gives the best caramel flavour.

Cinnamon - ground cinnamon, or use mixed spice.

Nuts - chopped nuts add texture and crunch to the apple bars. I like to use walnuts, but pecans would also work well.

    For the apple layer:

Apples - I like the tartness of Bramley apples, but if you prefer something sweeter use Granny Smith, Pink Lady or Gala apples.

Lemon Juice - a squeeze of lemon juice helps to prevent the apples from turning brown when sliced, and also elevates the flavour of the finished recipe.

Biscoff Spread - smooth Biscoff spread sweetens the tart cooking apples and provides a gooey sticky layer to the bars.

🔪 How to make Biscoff apple crumble bars

The recipe card with ingredient quantities and detailed instructions can be found at the bottom of the post

    One: Preheat the oven to 190 °C (170 °C fan/ 375 °F/ Gas 5) and line a 20cm (8") square baking tin with baking paper.

Two: Place the oats and flour into a large mixing bowl and rub in the cold cubed butter with your fingertips until crumbs form.

Three: Stir in the light brown sugar, cinnamon, and chopped walnuts.

Four: Press two-thirds of the crumble mixture into the prepared tin and pack down tightly with the back of a metal spoon. Set aside while you prepare the apples.

Five: Peel, core and slice the apples and lay them over the top of the crumble base layer. Squeeze over the lemon juice.

Six: Warm the Biscoff spread in the microwave for 20 seconds, and then use a spoon to drizzle it over the apples.

Seven: Top with the remainder of the crumble mix and lightly press down with your hand. Bake in the oven for 35 minutes until golden brown. Allow to cool completely before cutting into bars.

    Top Tips

    • Use chilled butter in the crumble to achieve a crumbly crisp topping, enhancing the bar's overall texture.
    • Use smooth Biscoff spread and soften it in the microwave to make it easier to drizzle over the apples.
    • Allow the bars to cool completely before slicing to ensure they hold their shape and don't crumble.

      🍴 Serving suggestions

Biscoff apple crumble bars can be served on their own or as a delicious dessert, but there are many ways to take them to the next level. Here are a few serving suggestions:

      • Top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or honeycomb ice cream for a delectable dessert
      • Drizzle with salted caramel sauce or more melted Biscoff spread for a sweet and indulgent treat.
      • Add a dollop of whipped cream or clotted cream for extra indulgence and sprinkle some crushed Biscoff biscuits on top.

      📖 Variations

      • Incorporate a layer of mixed berries (raspberries and blackberries would work well) alongside the apple filling for a tart and fruity twist.
      • Integrate spices like cardamom or nutmeg into the crumble mixture for a warm and aromatic flavour, perfect for autumn.
      • Add chocolate chips to the crumble for a rich and indulgent twist, making the dessert even more luxurious.
      • Swap the Biscoff spread for salted caramel sauce or homemade toffee sauce.

      🥡 Storage

Store - When it comes to storing Biscoff apple crumble bars, it's important to keep them in an airtight container to maintain their freshness. You can store them at room temperature for up to 3-4 days, but if you want to keep them for longer, it's recommended to freeze them.

Freeze - Wrap the apple bars tightly with cling film and place them in an airtight container or freezer bag. They can be frozen for up to 3 months. When you want to enjoy them, simply defrost in the fridge overnight and bring them to room temperature before serving.
