🛒 Ingredient notes
Parsnips - When selecting parsnips, choose ones that are firm and have no discoloration or soft spots. Peel, quarter, and remove any woody cores. If you don't like really crispy, slightly burnt bits, trim off the pointy ends (although I personally enjoy them!)
Oil - For coating the parsnips, I use light olive oil to prevent them from sticking to the air fryer basket. Alternatively, you can use vegetable oil.
Maple Syrup - or swap for honey instead.
Sea Salt & Pepper - for seasoning.
🔪 How to cook parsnips in air fryer
The recipe card with ingredient quantities and detailed instructions can be found at the bottom of the post
Prep: Preheat the air fryer to 200 °C (400 °F).
Top Tips
- Cut the parsnips into even sizes. This ensures that they cook evenly and are all done at the same time.
- Just like with an oven, it's essential to preheat the air fryer to get the best results.
- Make sure you leave enough space between the parsnips in the air fryer basket to allow for even cooking.
- During the cooking process, shake the basket once or twice to ensure that the parsnips cook evenly on all sides.
- A light coating of oil helps prevent the parsnips from sticking to the basket and promotes even browning.
- Don't forget to season the parsnips with sea salt and pepper to enhance their natural flavours.
🍴 Serving suggestions
Serve the maple glazed parsnips for Christmas lunch with slow cooker turkey crown, air fryer pigs in blankets, air fryer roast potatoes, slow cooker red cabbage, roasted brussels sprouts, sausage meat stuffing, and bread sauce.
They are also great with regular roast dinners (try my slow cooker roast beef, slow cooker lamb breast, and air fryer whole chicken!).
Or, why not serve them as air fryer parsnip fries and dip in air fryer baked camembert?
📖 Variations
- Sprinkle grated Parmesan over the parsnips before air frying for a delicious cheesy twist.
- Swap the maple syrup for honey for a different taste.
- Add some carrots to the mix for air fryer carrots and parsnips. They go well together and add a pop of colour to your dish.
- Season with herbs such as thyme, oregano, or rosemary, or use herb blends such as Italian seasoning.
- Add some cayenne pepper or chili flakes for a spicy kick.
- Add some garlic powder for a delicious garlic flavour.
🥡 Storage
For the best taste and texture, it's recommended to enjoy the parsnips fresh, straight out of the air fryer.
Store - If you have any leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days.
Reheat - To reheat, you can use the air fryer at 180 °C for 3 minutes, oven, or microwave.
Freeze - Please note that these parsnips are not suitable for home freezing.
❓ Frequently asked questions
Frozen parsnips purchased in the freezer section of the supermarket have been prepared in a way that allows them to be cooked from frozen in an air fryer.
It's not necessary to parboil parsnips before air frying.
Young, small parsnips don't really need peeling – you can just scrub them clean and pat dry. Older parsnips should be peeled and the central core cut away.
