🛒 Ingredient notes
Mincemeat - use a good-quality homemade or store-bought version. If serving to vegetarians, ensure it's free from beef suet
Flour - plain flour (white or wholemeal).
Oats - rolled porridge oats (avoid jumbo oats).
Cinnamon - ground cinnamon, or swap for mixed spice.
Sugar - light brown sugar, or use golden caster sugar.
Butter - salted butter balances the sweetness of the mincemeat. The butter needs to be cold and cubed, ready for rubbing into the dry ingredients.
Walnuts - chopped walnuts add crunch and texture to the crumble topping. Leave them out if you prefer.
What is mincemeat?
During medieval times, mincemeat originally contained minced meat along with fruit and spices. The modern version is a mixture of chopped dried fruit, spirits (brandy, rum, or whisky), and spices such as cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Why not try adding it to an apple crumble?
🔪 How to make mincemeat crumble traybake

One: Preheat the oven to 190C (170 fan/ Gas 5/ 375F) and grease and line a 20cm (8 inch) square baking tin with non stick baking paper or parchment paper.
Two: Put the flour, oats, and cinnamon in a large mixing bowl and rub in the cold cubed butter until you get a breadcrumb consistency. You can do this in the food processor if you prefer, using the pulse setting.
Three: Stir in the sugar.
Four: Press half of the crumble mixture into the base of the tin. Compact it down firmly with the back of a heavy metal spoon.
Five: Spread over the mincemeat.
Six: Mix the chopped walnuts into the remaining crumble mixture and scatter on top of the mincemeat. Lightly press down with your hands.
Seven: Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes until golden brown.
Eight: Allow to cool completely before cutting into bars. Dust with icing sugar if you like!
Top Tips
- Chill the butter first - Cold butter in the crumble helps create a light, crisp, and slightly crumbly texture.
- Press evenly - Press the base firmly and evenly into the tin to avoid it breaking apart when slicing.
- Use good-quality mincemeat - Whether store-bought or homemade, a rich, flavourful mincemeat makes a big difference.
- Cool completely before slicing - This prevents the slice from falling apart and ensures neat pieces.

Serve the mincemeat slices at festive gatherings-they're a staple at our Boxing Day buffet, along with puff pastry sausage rolls, Christmas tiffin, Christmas star biscuits, and cranberry and white chocolate blondies!

Store - The mincemeat slices will keep in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
Freeze - They can be frozen for up to 3 months. Once cool, place the bars into a freezer-safe container or freezer bag. Defrost at room temperature before serving.
