🛒 Ingredient notes

Mincemeat - a good quality homemade or shop-bought mincemeat. If you're serving this recipe to vegetarians make sure there is no beef suet in it.
Flour - plain flour (white or wholemeal).
Oats - rolled porridge oats - jumbo oats don't work so well.
Cinnamon - ground cinnamon, or swap for mixed spice.
Sugar - light brown sugar (muscovado sugar), or swap for golden caster sugar.
Butter - salted butter balances the sweetness of the mincemeat. The butter needs to be cold and cubed, ready for rubbing into the dry ingredients.
Walnuts - chopped walnuts add crunch and texture to the crumble topping. Leave them out if you prefer.
What is mincemeat?
During Medieval times, mincemeat originally contained minced meat along with fruit and spices. The modern version is a mixture of chopped dried fruit, spirits (brandy, rum, or whisky), and spices such as cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Why not try adding it to an apple crumble?
