    🛒 Ingredient notes

Ingredients for the toffee apple crumble.

Bramley Apples - Known for their tart and acidic flavor, which makes them perfect for use in baking and cooking. When cooked, they break down easily and create a soft, fluffy texture. You could substitute for Granny Smith apples or a sweeter red apple.

Cinnamon - Ground cinnamon adds warmth to the dish and pairs perfectly with the apples.

    For the toffee sauce:

Golden Syrup - With its rich sweet flavour, it adds sweetness to the sauce.

    Butter - For richness.

Sugar - Light brown sugar is used for a lovely caramel flavour. You could also use golden caster sugar.

Cream - Single cream gives the toffee sauce that silky smooth finish that everyone loves.

Vanilla - A teaspoon of vanilla extract boosts the flavour.

💡Top Tip! To save time, you could use shop-bought toffee sauce!

    For the crumble topping:

Flour - plain flour is best for crumble.

Oats - Adds texture and nuttiness to the topping.

Sugar - demerara sugar gives the crumble a lovely sweet crunch. You could swap for light brown sugar or caster sugar if you prefer.

Butter - melted unsalted butter is mixed into the dry ingredients to create the easy crumble topping!

🔪 How to make toffee apple crumble

The recipe card with ingredient quantities and detailed instructions can be found at the bottom of the post

    Make the homemade toffee sauce

Toffee sauce ingredients in a pan.
One: Place all of the toffee sauce ingredients in a heavy-based saucepan. Bring to a boil, and cook for 3 minutes.
    Smooth toffee sauce.
Two: Whisk continuously to prevent the sauce from burning. After 3 minutes, take the saucepan off the heat and set aside.

    Make the easy crumble topping

Ingredients for flapjack style crumble topping in a bowl.
Three: Put the dry crumble ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Pour over the melted butter.
Crumbly oat topping for apple crumble.
Four: Mix the melted butter into the dry ingredients with a spoon until crumbles form.

    Assembling the apple crumble

Sliced Bramley apples, cinnamon and toffee sauce in a pie dish.
Five: Peel, core and slice the Bramley apples and place them in a 1.5 litre pie dish. Sprinkle over the cinnamon and pour over half the toffee sauce (reserve the other half for serving).
Toffee apple crumble ready to be baked in the oven.
Six: Spoon the crumble topping onto the apples and bake in the oven (180°C/350°F) for 40-45 minutes until golden brown. Serve with the reserved toffee sauce.

    Top Tips

    • Use Bramley apples for the best results. They have a tart flavour that works well with the sweet toffee sauce.
    • Make sure your crumble topping is evenly mixed and clumpy. This will give it a nice texture and ensure that it crisps up in the oven.
    • To make the toffee sauce, use a heavy-bottomed saucepan and stir the ingredients constantly to prevent burning.
    • Let the crumble cool for a few minutes before serving. This will allow the toffee sauce to thicken up and the crumble topping to crisp up even more.

    🍴 Serving suggestions

Toffee apple crumble is best served warm. Pair it with cold vanilla ice cream, no-churn honeycomb ice cream, or creamy custard for a contrast in temperatures.

    📖 Variations

    • Add chopped nuts, such as pecans or walnuts, to the crumble topping for extra crunch and flavour.
    • Substitute the Bramley apples with another variety of cooking apple, such as Granny Smith.
    • For a healthier version, use coconut oil instead of butter in the crumble topping and coconut cream instead of single cream in the toffee sauce.
    • Add a pinch of nutmeg or ginger to the crumble topping for extra warmth and spice.
    • Incorporate lemon zest or orange zest into the crumble mixture or the apple filling to give the dish a fresh lift.
    • Add a splash of Calvados or rum to the apple mixture for a more adult version of the dessert.
    • For a gluten-free version, substitute the flour with almond flour or gluten-free plain flour.
    • Make individual servings in ramekins for a cute and easy-to-serve presentation.

    🥡 Storage

Store - If you have any leftover crumble, let it cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container. Store the crumble in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Reheat - To reheat the crumble, preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) (. Place the crumble in an oven-safe dish and bake for 10-15 minutes, or until heated through. You can also reheat individual portions in the microwave or air fryer.

Freeze - The crumble can be frozen for up to 3 months.
