🛒 Ingredient notes
Filling
Frozen Mixed Berries - or just use one type of frozen berry.
Ground Almonds - helps thicken the berry juices to create a delicious sauce.
Brown Sugar - a small amount to sweeten the berries. Use caster sugar instead if you don't have light brown sugar available.
Orange - half a teaspoon of orange zest for extra flavour.
Crumble
Flour - white plain flour is best.
Oats - use rolled oats and not jumbo oats as they don't soak up the melted butter very well.
Light Brown Sugar - or golden caster sugar.
Butter - unsalted and melted for a flapjack style oaty crumble topping.

- For extra sweetness, sprinkle a tablespoon of demerara sugar over the crumble before baking.
🍴 Serving suggestions
Serve the mixed berry crumble with creamy custard, clotted cream, whipped cream, or homemade vanilla ice cream (honeycomb ice cream works well too!).
Eat leftovers for breakfast with a dollop of plain yogurt!
📖 Variations
- Use fresh berries instead of frozen berries. Raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, blackcurrants, and strawberries all work well.
- Make the crumble vegan-friendly and replace the butter with a dairy-free alternative.
- Swap the orange zest for lemon zest or ground cinnamon.
- Add a handful of desiccated coconut to the crumble topping for extra flavour.
- Incorporate chopped nuts (walnuts or pecan nuts would work well) into the crumble topping for extra crunch.
- Make the crumble in individual ramekins rather than one pie dish. You'll need 6 small oven-proof dishes.
🥡 Storage
Store - Leftover berry crumble can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Reheat - Microwave on high until hot. Allow the crumble to cool slightly before serving.
Freeze - Place leftovers in a freezer-safe container and freeze for up to 3 months.
❓ Frequently asked questions
Not enough butter in the crumble topping can cause it to be dry and floury. If you feel your crumble topping is too dry, add tablespoons of melted butter until you get the right consistency.
The fruit layer should be bubbling and the surface of the crumble should be an even medium golden brown colour.
