We do love experimenting with different porridge (oatmeal) flavours, and I'm pleased to report this creamy Nutella porridge is right up there, and on a par with my very favourite Biscoff porridge!
Creamy Nutella melts into a warm batch of stovetop-made oatmeal, and is topped with freshly toasted chopped hazelnuts! The kids prefer their bowls topped with sliced banana, which is another great flavour combination.

✔️ Why should you try it?
- Quick and easy to make.
- Only 4 ingredients.
- Keeps tummies full until lunchtime.
- Perfect for a treat weekend breakfast.
🥘 Ingredients
- Nutella - or any other brand of chocolate hazelnut spread.
- Oats - ordinary rolled oats work best in this recipe. Don't use instant or jumbo oats as they absorb the liquid differently.
- Whole Milk - or use almond milk if you prefer.
- Hazelnuts - toasted and chopped.
🔪 Instructions
The recipe card with ingredient quantities and detailed instructions can be found at the bottom of the post
- Place the oats and milk in a saucepan.
- Bring to a boil, then turn down the heat and cook for 3-4 minutes until cooked and creamy.
- Take the pan off the heat and stir through the Nutella.
- Serve with extra milk, chopped hazelnuts, and an extra dollop of smooth Nutella.
💭 Top tips
- A great time-saving tip is to weigh the oats and measure the milk into a jug the night before. Don't forget to store the milk in the fridge!
- Buy ready toasted and chopped hazelnuts, or toast them the night before, so you're all ready to go in the morning.
- Feel free to add more milk to make the porridge the consistency you prefer. I prefer thick and creamy!
🍴 Serving suggestions
The Nutella porridge makes a delicious weekend breakfast served with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice or fruit smoothie. My kids often request it as an after-school snack too, just like my overnight Weetabix recipe!
📖 Variations
- Top the Nutella porridge with fresh fruit such as sliced bananas, blueberries, or raspberries.
- Stir in a spoonful of chia seeds for extra goodness.
- Use plant-based milk (almond works well) instead of cow's milk, if you prefer.
- Adapt the recipe to make slow cooker porridge.
🥡 Storage
Porridge is best eaten fresh as soon as it is made!
Leftover porridge can be reheated if required, but it will thicken on cooling so you will need to add a little extra liquid, (water or milk) and stir it well before reheating it in a pan or microwave.
❓ FAQs
Nutella contains skimmed milk powder and is therefore not vegan. Some supermarket own brands of chocolate hazelnut spread are free of animal-based ingredients. Be sure to check the label.
Nutella contains a small amount of calcium but also quite a lot of sugars and fat. We, therefore, suggest eating this Nutella porridge as a special weekend treat breakfast, and not an everyday breakfast.
Oatmeal and porridge are basically the same thing – it's what you get when you add milk or water to oats and cook them. In the UK we call it porridge, in the United States they call it oatmeal.

I love the idea of having prepped the night before in the fridge as sometimes it takes a bit for my brain to wake up in the morning, haha! I knew this would be a hit though. I mean, can you really go wrong with Nutella?! I think not. Absolutely delicious!
