🛒 Ingredient notes
French Bread - I like to use a part-baked baguette as I always have some in my pantry. However, a freshly baked half baguette can also be used.
Pizza Sauce - a good quality store-bought pizza sauce, marinara sauce or tomato puree (tomato paste).
Cheese - For ease, I like ready-grated mozzarella cheese, but grated cheddar or buffalo mozzarella would also work. Any cheese that melts well!
Herbs - a small amount of dried oregano gives the pizza extra flavour. Other dried herbs could be used like rosemary or thyme.
🔪 How to cook French bread pizza in air fryer
The recipe card with ingredient quantities and detailed instructions can be found at the bottom of the post
One: Cut the part baked baguette in half lengthways, then cut each half in half again so you are left with 4 slices of bread (see photo below)
Two: Spread each slice with pizza sauce.
Three: Top with the mozzarella cheese and oregano.
Four: Place the pizza slices in your air fryer basket and air fry for 8 minutes (start checking after 6 minutes) until crispy and golden. Be careful not to burn yourself on the air fryer basket when removing the slices (I use tongs to remove them safely).
Top Tips
- To get the best results, preheat your air fryer before placing the pizza in it. This ensures a nice, crispy base and well-cooked toppings.
- Be careful not to over-sauce your bread. Too much sauce can make the bread soggy. Instead, aim for a thin, even layer of sauce.
- When it comes to toppings, less is more. Overloading your French bread with too many toppings can cause it to be undercooked or soggy. Stick to a few of your favourites for the best results.
- The cooking time may vary depending on the air fryer model and the amount of toppings on your pizza. It's always a good idea to start checking a bit early to ensure you don't overcook it.
- Allow your pizza to cool for a minute or two after removing it from the air fryer. This will help the cheese to set and prevent it from sliding off when you cut into it.
- French bread pizzas are especially popular among kids, so involve them in the process of choosing and arranging their favourite toppings. Make sure to have a variety of options available, from classic pepperoni, ham, and cheese to an array of vegetarian toppings like sweetcorn, spinach, and red onions.
🍴 Serving suggestions
Air fryer French bread pizza is great with a green salad, soup, as part of an antipasti platter with olives and cured meats, or as a side for pasta (it goes particularly well with this creamy bourisn spaghetti!).
📖 Variations
Air fryer French bread pizza offers a fantastic base for experimenting with a variety of toppings to suit your taste buds.
- For the meat lovers, bacon is an excellent topping to consider. Crispy, cooked bacon bits can be scattered across your French bread pizza base, adding a smoky, savoury flavour. Combine it with pineapple chunks for an irresistible sweet and salty contrast, reminiscent of the ever-popular Hawaiian-style pizza.
- Add pepperoni or sliced sausage for a meat feast pizza.
- Use barbecue sauce instead of marinara, topped with cooked chicken, red onion, and a mix of cheddar and mozzarella cheeses.
- Top with feta cheese, olives, red onion, bell peppers, air fryer garlic mushrooms, and a sprinkle of oregano for a Mediterranean twist.
- Top your pizza with a variety of vegetables such as peppers, onions, mushrooms, spinach, and tomatoes. Add some goat cheese or feta for extra flavour.
- Spread a layer of pesto sauce on your bread, top with sun-dried tomatoes, mozzarella, and a sprinkle of parmesan.
Remember, there are no strict rules when it comes to pizza toppings. Feel free to mix and match ingredients to create your own unique masterpiece.
🥡 Storage
To maintain its crispy texture, it's best to serve it fresh out of the air fryer.
Should you have any leftovers, store them in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
To reheat, pop them back into your air fryer for 2-3 minutes at 180°C (350F); this will ensure they remain crispy and delicious.
Avoid using a microwave to reheat, as this could make your French Bread Pizza soggy.
