✔️ Why you'll love this recipe!
- The air fried garlic mushrooms recipe is straightforward, making it perfect for those rushed weekday dinners or even a quick snack.
- They make a great appetiser, side dish, or even a topping for your favourite steak or pasta. The possibilities are endless.
- The combination of earthy mushrooms and aromatic garlic creates a unique, savoury flavour that's utterly delicious.
🛒 Ingredient notes
Mushrooms - I use button mushrooms for their mild flavour and firm texture. If you prefer, you can use chestnut mushrooms, sliced portabello mushrooms or closed cup mushrooms.
Garlic Powder - Offers a more mellow and sweet flavour than fresh garlic, but still provides a significant aroma and taste to dishes.
Olive Oil - The olive oil helps the mushrooms to cook evenly and prevents them from sticking to the air fryer basket.
Worcestershire Sauce - Adds a savoury and umami taste to the mushrooms.
Salt and Pepper: These classic seasonings need no introduction. Salt enhances the overall flavour of the dish, while black pepper adds a hint of heat.
🔪 How long to cook garlic mushrooms in air fryer
The recipe card with ingredient quantities and detailed instructions can be found at the bottom of the post
One: Preheat the air fryer to 180 °C (350 °F).
Two: In a bowl place the halved button mushrooms, olive oil, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper and gently mix together until all the mushrooms are coated.
Three: Air fry for 8 -10 minutes until tender (give them a shake halfway through cooking). Sprinkle with chopped parsley before serving.
Top Tips
- Always opt for fresh mushrooms for this recipe. They should be firm, with a smooth appearance. Avoid any with dark spots or a slimy texture, as these are signs of decay.
- Remember, never soak your mushrooms in water to clean them; they will absorb the water like a sponge. Instead, use a damp kitchen towel or a soft brush to remove any dirt or grit.
- To intensify the flavours, consider marinating the mushrooms for at least 30 minutes before cooking. This allows the mushrooms to soak up the flavours of garlic, olive oil, and Worcestershire sauce.
- Cooking times may vary depending on the size of your mushrooms and the model of your air fryer. Always check for doneness by taking a small bite to ensure the mushrooms are cooked to your liking.
🍴 Serving suggestions
Garlic mushrooms are a versatile side dish that pairs well with many meals. Serve them alongside grilled steak, roast chicken, or as part of a full English breakfast. They also make a great topping for toast, tossed into pasta (try my garlic mushroom pasta), or added to a warm salad.
📖 Variations
Looking to add a twist to your air fryer garlic mushrooms? Here are a few variations that you can experiment with:
- Stuffed Garlic Mushrooms: Hollow out the button mushrooms and stuff them with a mixture of cream cheese, grated Parmesan, finely chopped spring onions, and garlic powder before air frying.
- Spicy Garlic Mushrooms: If you're a fan of heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a splash of hot chilli sauce to the marinade. This will give your mushrooms an added kick.
- Herbed Garlic Mushrooms: For an additional layer of flavour, incorporate dried or fresh herbs into your marinade. Rosemary, thyme, or parsley would work wonderfully.
- Garlic Mushrooms with Balsamic Glaze: Drizzle a bit of balsamic reduction over the cooked mushrooms just before serving. The tangy, sweet balsamic glaze adds depth to the flavours of the garlic mushrooms.
- Panko-Crusted Garlic Mushrooms: For a crispy element, dip your marinated mushrooms in panko breadcrumbs before air frying. The result is a wonderful contrast between the crunchy coating and the tender mushroom inside.
🥡 Storage
Store - store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. You can use leftover mushrooms as a topping for pizza, pasta, or salads and they can also be added to soups or stews for added flavour.
Reheat - to reheat your leftover mushrooms, you can use the air fryer again or reheat them in the microwave. If you choose to use the air fryer, preheat it to 180°C/350°F and cook the mushrooms for 5 minutes until they are heated through. If you prefer to use the microwave, place the mushrooms in a microwave-safe dish and heat them on high for 1-2 minutes, stirring occasionally until they are heated through.
❓ Frequently asked questions
While we recommend button mushrooms due to their firm texture and mild flavour, you can certainly try other types. Cremini, shiitake, or portobello mushrooms would also work well. However, the cooking times might need to be adjusted depending on the size and variety of mushroom.
These mushrooms are best enjoyed fresh. However, you can marinate the mushrooms and keep them in the fridge for a few hours before you're ready to cook them.
If you can't find Worcestershire sauce, you can use soy sauce or tamari as a substitute. You could also make a homemade version using vinegar, brown sugar, garlic powder, and a little mustard.
Yes, you can bake the garlic mushrooms in an oven preheated to 200°C. Spread them out on a baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes or until they are cooked to your liking. However, do note that the texture might be slightly different from air frying.
