🛒 Ingredient notes

Mushrooms - I like to use button mushrooms for their mild flavour and firm texture. They're an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, such as selenium, riboflavin, and niacin, and they also contain a good amount of dietary fibre. If you prefer, you can use chestnut mushrooms, sliced portabello mushrooms or closed cup mushrooms.
Garlic Powder - Offers a more mellow and sweet flavour than fresh garlic, but still provides a significant aroma and taste to dishes.
Olive Oil - The olive oil helps the mushrooms to cook evenly and prevents them from sticking to the air fryer basket.
Worcestershire Sauce - Adds a savoury and umami taste to the mushrooms. It has a complex, savoury flavour, combining vinegar, molasses, sugar, salt, anchovies, tamarind extract, onions, and garlic, among other ingredients.
Salt and Pepper: These classic seasonings need no introduction. Salt enhances the overall flavour of the dish, while black pepper adds a hint of heat and complexity.

💭 Expert tips
- Always opt for fresh button mushrooms for this recipe. They should be firm, with a smooth appearance. Avoid any with dark spots or a slimy texture, as these are signs of decay.
- Remember, never soak your mushrooms in water to clean them; they will absorb the water like a sponge. Instead, use a damp kitchen towel or a soft brush to remove any dirt or grit.
- To intensify the flavours, consider marinating the mushrooms for at least 30 minutes before cooking. This allows the mushrooms to soak up the flavours of garlic, olive oil, and Worcestershire sauce.
- Cooking times may vary depending on the size of your mushrooms and the model of your air fryer. Always check for doneness by taking a small bite to ensure the mushrooms are cooked to your liking.
🍴 Serving suggestions
Mushrooms are quite versatile and can be served in several ways:
As a Starter: Serve them as a standalone appetiser with a dipping sauce of your choice. A creamy garlic aioli or a tangy barbecue sauce would pair well.
In Salads: Add these garlic mushrooms to your salads for an added boost of flavour and texture. They can give a simple green salad a gourmet twist.
As a Side Dish: Serve these mushrooms alongside grilled meats, fish or air fryer quiche Lorraine. The robust flavours of the garlic mushrooms complement the smoky taste of grilled foods beautifully.
With Pasta: Stir these mushrooms into your pasta for a hearty and flavourful meal. They pair well with creamy pasta sauces as well as lighter olive oil-based ones (you might like my creamy garlic mushrooms pasta!).
On Toast: Use these garlic mushrooms as a topping on a slice of toasted sourdough bread for a quick and easy snack or a light lunch.

📖 Variations
Looking to add a twist to your air fryer garlic mushrooms? Here are a few variations that you can experiment with:
- Stuffed Garlic Mushrooms: Hollow out the button mushrooms and stuff them with a mixture of cream cheese, grated Parmesan, finely chopped spring onions, and garlic powder before air frying.
- Spicy Garlic Mushrooms: If you're a fan of heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a splash of hot chilli sauce to the marinade. This will give your mushrooms an added kick.
- Herbed Garlic Mushrooms: For an additional layer of flavour, incorporate dried or fresh herbs into your marinade. Rosemary, thyme, or parsley would work wonderfully.
- Garlic Mushrooms with Balsamic Glaze: Drizzle a bit of balsamic reduction over the cooked mushrooms just before serving. The tangy, sweet balsamic glaze adds depth to the flavours of the garlic mushrooms.
- Panko-Crusted Garlic Mushrooms: For a crispy element, dip your marinated mushrooms in panko breadcrumbs before air frying. The result is a wonderful contrast between the crunchy coating and the tender mushroom inside.
🥡 Storage
Store - If you have any leftover mushrooms, you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. You can use leftover mushrooms as a topping for pizza, pasta, or salads and they can also be added to soups or stews for added flavour.
Reheat - To reheat your leftover mushrooms, you can use the air fryer again or reheat them in the microwave. If you choose to use the air fryer, preheat it to 180°C/350°F and cook the mushrooms for 5 minutes until they are heated through. If you prefer to use the microwave, place the mushrooms in a microwave-safe dish and heat them on high for 1-2 minutes, stirring occasionally until they are heated through.

❓ Frequently asked questions
While we recommend button mushrooms due to their firm texture and mild flavour, you can certainly try other types. Cremini, shiitake, or portobello mushrooms would also work well. However, the cooking times might need to be adjusted depending on the size and variety of mushroom.
These mushrooms are best enjoyed fresh. However, you can marinate the mushrooms and keep them in the fridge for a few hours before you're ready to cook them.
If you can't find Worcestershire sauce, you can use soy sauce or tamari as a substitute. You could also make a homemade version using vinegar, brown sugar, garlic powder, and a little mustard.
Yes, you can bake the garlic mushrooms in an oven preheated to 200°C. Spread them out on a baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes or until they are cooked to your liking. However, do note that the texture might be slightly different from air frying.
