What is Camembert?
Camembert cheese originates from the region of Normandy in France. It's a moist and soft surface-ripened cow's milk cheese with a unique and rich flavour, variously described as mushroomy, eggy, garlicky, nutty, grassy, and/or fruity!
🔪 How to make baked camembert in air fryer
The recipe card with ingredient quantities and detailed instructions can be found at the bottom of the post
One: Preheat the air fryer to 180°C (350°F). Unwrap the camembert and discard the plastic wrapping, then place it back in the wooden box.
Two: Cut two slits in the shape of a cross on the top of the camembert (use a sharp pairing knife for this).
Three: Drizzle/sprinkle the oil, honey, thyme leaves, and sea salt over the rind and place the unpeeled garlic clove on top. Place the camembert into the air fryer basket.
Four: Air fry for 10-12 minutes until the cheese has melted. If you want to crisp up slices of bread or baguette, simply place them in the air fryer basket around the camembert cheese for the last 4-5 minutes of cooking.

Top Tips
- Use the right container: if your camembert doesn't come in a wooden box, place it in a small oven-proof baking dish or on a piece of parchment paper.
- Preheat your air fryer: preheating ensures the centre of the cheese is perfectly melted and gooey.
🍴 Serving suggestions
Serve the air fryer baked camembert with bread (pesto focaccia is delicious), part-baked rolls, breadsticks, crackers, air fryer pigs in blankets, vegetable sticks such as celery and carrot, and crisp apple slices.
Dried fruit such as dates and apricots also go well with camembert, or why not place it in the centre of a charcuterie board?

📖 Variations
- Swap the honey and thyme for cranberry sauce or caramelised onion chutney for a tangy-sweet flavour contrast.
- Use different herbs such as sage, rosemary, or oregano for a fragrant, earthy taste.
- Sprinkle chopped walnuts, pecan nuts, or toasted pine nuts over the cheese at the end of cooking for added texture.
- Add chilli flakes or a drizzle of hot honey for a gentle spicy kick.
- Include crispy fried bacon pieces or pancetta for a smoky, savoury addition.
- Use brie instead of camembert for a milder option.
- Try a festive variation with honey, garlic, smoked paprika, and walnuts.
- Add a drizzle of balsamic glaze or fig jam after cooking for a sophisticated sweet-savoury combination.
- Mix in chopped fresh herbs like thyme or chives after baking for a fresh, vibrant finish.
🥡 Storage
Eat the baked camembert fresh from the air fryer while the cheese is still warm and gooey.

❓ Frequently asked questions
Brie is generally milder, with a more creamy flavour, while Camembert has a more intense flavour, with deeper earthy notes. The texture of both cheeses is similar, although ripe brie can be quite runny.
Air fry the camembert in your Ninja air fryer for 10-12 minutes for the perfect gooey texture. Other air fryer models may differ and I suggest checking the camembert from 8 minutes onwards.
Place the camembert in a small baking dish or on parchment paper.
The rind of the wheel of camembert helps contain the melty oozy cheese. Air frying wedges won't work as the cheese will melt all over the air fryer. Breaded camembert wedges on the other hand can be air fried successfully as the breaded layer prevents the cheese from escaping.
Yes, the rind of camembert cheese is perfectly safe to eat.
The cooking time will vary depending on the size of the camembert round. A standard 250g/8oz round is ideal for air frying. Air fry at 350°F/180°C. This temperature is hot enough to crisp the exterior without drying out the interior. Start checking at 10 minutes. A 250g round will typically take 12-15 minutes total to be warmed through and have a golden brown crust.
