Nutella porridge is a quick and indulgent breakfast made by stirring Nutella into creamy cooked oats. Ready in just 10 minutes, this chocolate hazelnut oatmeal is rich, warming, and perfect for busy mornings when you want something a little more special than ordinary porridge.
Unlike many Nutella oatmeal recipes, this version balances sweetness with toasted hazelnuts, and optional fresh fruit, to create a breakfast that's comforting without being overly sweet. Try my creamy banana porridge too!

Quick Summary - Nutella Oatmeal
I've found that the secret to the best flavour is stirring the Nutella through the oats after cooking rather than adding it at the start. This gives the porridge a smoother texture and a richer chocolate hazelnut taste. It's one of those simple breakfasts that feels like a real treat, yet only takes minutes to make.

We love experimenting with different porridge (oatmeal) flavours, and I'm pleased to report this creamy Nutella porridge is right up there, and on a par with my very favourite, Biscoff porridge!
Creamy Nutella melts into a warm batch of stovetop-made oatmeal, and is topped with freshly toasted chopped hazelnuts! The kids prefer their bowls topped with sliced banana and fresh berries, which is another great flavour combination.

🥘 Key Ingredients

A full ingredients list along with Metric and US Customary measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.
- Porridge oats - rolled oats create the creamiest texture.
- Milk - whole milk or semi-skimmed milk gives richness, but any dairy or plant-based milk works.
- Nutella - or use another brand of chocolate hazelnut spread..
- Chopped toasted hazelnuts - adds crunch.
- Fresh berries and banana (optional) - help balance the sweetness.
- Salt
The Best Oats for Nutella Oatmeal
Rolled oats produce the creamiest texture. Quick oats work in a pinch but create a softer consistency, while steel-cut oats require a much longer cooking time.

📖 Variations
- Top the Nutella porridge with fresh fruit such as sliced bananas, blueberries, strawberries or raspberries.
- Stir in a spoonful of chia seeds or a tablespoon of chocolate protein powder for extra protein.
- Swap Nutella for peanut butter.
- Use plant-based milk (almond milk works well), if you prefer.
- Adapt the recipe to make slow cooker porridge. You can also make the recipe in a microwave.
- Make Nutella overnight oats instead.
🔪 How to make Nutella porridge
- Place the oats and milk in a saucepan.
- Bring to a boil, then turn down the heat and cook for 3-4 minutes until cooked and creamy.
- Take the pan off the heat and stir through the Nutella.
- Serve with extra milk, chopped hazelnuts, and an extra dollop of smooth Nutella.

Top Tips
- Prep ahead for busy mornings - Weigh the oats and measure the milk into a jug the night before. Store the milk in the fridge and you'll be ready to start cooking straight away in the morning.
- Get your toppings ready - Save time by buying ready-toasted chopped hazelnuts, or toast and chop your own the night before. Store them in an airtight container until needed.
- Add the Nutella at the end - For the smoothest, creamiest texture, stir the Nutella into the porridge after cooking and removing the pan from the heat.
- Adjust the consistency to suit your taste - If the porridge thickens too much, simply stir in a splash of extra milk until it reaches your preferred consistency. I love mine thick and creamy!
- Balance the sweetness - A pinch of salt helps enhance the chocolate hazelnut flavour and prevents the porridge from tasting overly sweet.
- Make it extra indulgent - Drizzle a little warmed Nutella over the top before serving and finish with toasted hazelnuts for added crunch.
- Serve immediately - Nutella porridge is at its creamiest when freshly made, so enjoy it straight away for the best texture.
🍴 Serving suggestions
Nutella porridge is the ultimate comfort breakfast. Rich, creamy, and packed with chocolate hazelnut flavour, it's perfect for weekend brunch served alongside fresh orange juice or a fruit smoothie.
It's not just for breakfast either - my kids regularly enjoy a bowl as an after-school snack, just like they do with my my overnight Weetabix recipe!

Storage
Nutella porridge is best enjoyed freshly made while it's still warm and creamy.
If you do have leftovers, allow the porridge to cool completely before storing it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. As the porridge cools, it will naturally thicken, so stir in a splash of milk or water to loosen it before reheating. Warm gently in a saucepan over a low heat or microwave until piping hot, stirring well to restore its creamy texture.
❓ Nutella Oatmeal FAQs
Nutella contains skimmed milk powder and is therefore not vegan. Some supermarket own brands of chocolate hazelnut spread are free of animal-based ingredients. Be sure to check the label.
Oatmeal and porridge are basically the same thing - it's what you get when you add milk or water to oats and cook them. In the UK we call it porridge, in the United States they call it oatmeal.
Around 1 tablespoon per serving is usually enough to flavour the oats without making them overly sweet.
Yes. Microwave the oats and milk first, then stir through the Nutella once cooked.
