I always keep a few bags of frozen mixed berries in my freezer so I'm never too far away from this tasty crumble, even in the depths of winter when fresh berries aren't in season.

There's also no rubbing-in required for this easy frozen fruit crumble. Instead, melted butter is poured over the flour, oats, and sugar to create a beautifully golden crumbly topping for the berries! That's what makes it so quick to prepare!

    🛒 Ingredient notes

Ingredients for frozen mixed berry crumble.

    Filling

Frozen Mixed Berries - or just use one type of frozen berry.

Ground Almonds - helps thicken the berry juices to create a delicious sauce.

Brown Sugar - a small amount to sweeten the berries. Use caster sugar instead if you don't have light brown sugar available.

Orange - half a teaspoon of orange zest for extra flavour.

    Crumble

Flour - white plain flour is best.

Oats - use rolled oats and not jumbo oats as they don't soak up the melted butter very well.

Light Brown Sugar - or golden caster sugar.

Butter - unsalted and melted for a flapjack style oaty crumble topping.

🔪 How to make mixed berry crumble with frozen berries

The recipe card with ingredient quantities and detailed instructions can be found at the bottom of the post

One: Sprinkle the ground almonds into the bottom of a medium pie dish.

Two: Top with the frozen berries, 2 tablespoons of light brown sugar, and orange zest.

Three: In a mixing bowl, pour the melted butter over the plain flour, oats, and brown sugar for the crumble topping and mix together with a metal spoon until you get small crumbly clusters form.

Four: Spoon the crumble topping over the berries and bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes until the topping is golden and the berries are bubbling.

    Top Tips

    • Make sure the melted butter has cooled slightly before mixing it with the dry crumble ingredients.
    • Make up the crumble topping ahead of time and store it in the freezer ready to pull out at a moment's notice.
    • For extra sweetness, sprinkle a tablespoon of demerara sugar over the crumble before baking.

    🍴 Serving suggestions

Serve the mixed berry crumble with creamy custard, clotted cream, whipped cream, or homemade vanilla ice cream (honeycomb ice cream works well too!).

Eat leftovers for breakfast with a dollop of plain yogurt!

    📖 Variations

    • Use fresh berries instead of frozen berries. Raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, blackcurrants, and strawberries all work well.
    • Make the crumble vegan-friendly and replace the butter with a dairy-free alternative.
    • Swap the orange zest for lemon zest or ground cinnamon.
    • Add a handful of desiccated coconut to the crumble topping for extra flavour.
    • Incorporate chopped nuts (walnuts or pecan nuts would work well) into the crumble topping for extra crunch.
    • Make the crumble in individual ramekins rather than one pie dish. You'll need 6 small oven-proof dishes.

    🥡 Storage

Store - Leftover berry crumble can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Reheat - Microwave on high until hot. Allow the crumble to cool slightly before serving.

Freeze - Place leftovers in a freezer-safe container and freeze for up to 3 months.

    ❓ Frequently asked questions

Why is my crumble not crispy?

Not enough butter in the crumble topping can cause it to be dry and floury. If you feel your crumble topping is too dry, add tablespoons of melted butter until you get the right consistency.

How do you know when crumble is ready?

The fruit layer should be bubbling and the surface of the crumble should be an even medium golden brown colour.

    What to serve with crumble?

    1. Ice Cream
    2. Whipped Cream
    3. Clotted Cream
    4. Custard
    5. Greek Yogurt
