    Air Fryer Jacket Potatoes

I do love my air fryer, especially when I'm cooking these tasty air fryer baked potatoes in it (or jacket potatoes as we often call them in the UK!).

They turn out perfectly with the crispiest crispy skin, even crispier than oven-baked potatoes! Once you've made baked potatoes in your air fryer you'll never go back to oven baking!

👩‍🍳 Do you love cooking in your air fryer? Try my crunchy air fryer roast potatoes too! Great with a roast dinner!

✔️ Why you'll love this recipe!

Here's why this is the best air fryer baked potato recipe!

    • Crispy skin and fluffy middles.
    • No need to wrap the baking potatoes in foil.
    • No need to pierce the skin prior to air frying.
    • More energy efficient way to cook potatoes.
    • Lots of topping choices.

    🛒 Ingredients

Ingredients for air fryer baked potatoes.
    • Baking Potatoes - I prefer to use medium size white baking potatoes rather than very large ones, as they cook faster and more evenly in the air fryer basket. Don't forget to rinse, scrub and dry the potatoes before starting the recipe.
    • Fry Light Spray- or use 1 teaspoon of olive oil instead.
    • Sea Salt - for seasoning.

    🥄 Equipment

Which air fryer? I use the Ninja Foodi MAX PRO Health Grill, Flat Plate and Air Fryer with 7 customisable cooking functions including grill, flat plate, air fry, roast, bake, reheat and dehydrate! It also comes with a digital cooking probe that precisely monitors your food’s temperature as it cooks!

If you don't have an air fryer, you might want to take a look at my crispy polenta roast potatoes which can be cooked in a conventional oven!

    What is an air fryer?

Air fryers are small(ish) kitchen appliances that operate like a convection oven—except in a smaller, more concentrated space.

The air is circulated at a high temperature and evenly around the food, which makes the food cook more quickly than in a conventional oven and helps give foods a crispy coating without the need for lots of oil and fat.

🔪 How to make baked potatoes in an air fryer

The recipe card with ingredient quantities and detailed instructions can be found at the bottom of the post

One: Spray 2 or 3 sprays of fry light on the outside of the potatoes and rub in with your hands to coat each potato evenly.

Two: Place the baking potatoes in your pre-heated air fryer basket and sprinkle with sea salt.

Three: Cook for 40-45 minutes for medium-size baking potatoes, or 45-50 minutes for large baking potatoes (or until you can easily pierce into the centre of the potato with a sharp knife). Rotate with tongs halfway through cooking if you can.

    💭 Top tips

    • It's important to use baking potatoes for this recipe to ensure the fluffiest middle.
    • Don't overcrowd your air fryer basket. Each potato needs to have space around it to ensure crispy skin. I can fit 3 medium size potatoes in my air fryer (or 2 large ones), but if you have a smaller air fryer you may only be able to cook 2 medium size baking potatoes.
    • Rotating the potatoes halfway through cooking means the skin crisps up evenly on all sides. Use tongs as they will be very hot!
    • It's best to allow the potatoes to cool down for 5 minutes in the air fryer basket before serving them.

🍴 What to serve with air fryer baked potatoes

The baked potatoes can be served simply with butter, sour cream, baked beans, or grated cheese for an easy dinner. I love a side salad or some crispy air fryer broccoli with them too.

Sometimes I'll make up some tuna or prawn mayonnaise to dollop on top, and for something even more substantial, leftover slow cooker chilli con carne, slow cooker bolognese, or quorn chilli is also delicious!

They also make a great side to slow cooker hunters chicken or courgette and feta burgers.

    📖 Variations

    • Swap the fry light spray for olive oil or avocado oil.
    • Sprinkle the skins with garlic powder, smoked paprika or even chilli powder before air frying for more flavour.
    • Make mini air fryer baked potatoes for appetisers or finger buffets. Use baby potatoes instead of baking potatoes and cut the cooking time in half.
    • Don't have an air fryer? Make my easy oven roasted baby potatoes instead!

    🥡 Storage

    • Store. Cooked air fryer baked potatoes can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheated (instructions below!).
    • Reheat. The baked potatoes can be reheated in the air fryer until hot, or alternatively place in a microwaveable dish and microwave until piping hot. If microwaving, you'll lose some of the crispiness of the skin, so I prefer eating these fresh out of the air fryer.
    • Freeze. Cooked baked potatoes are not suitable for freezing.

    ❓ FAQs

Do I need to preheat my air fryer before cooking?

It depends on the make and model of your air fryer. Most air fryers have a preheat function which ensures they get up to temperature before adding food.

What temperature should I air fry baked potatoes?

200°c (or 400°F) is the best temperature setting to cook baking potatoes in an air fryer.

For all the AF recipes I've been making lately, I hadn't actually tried a whole potato! This is great - way better than the oven, love the crispy outside skin.
