✔️ Why you'll love this recipe!

    1. Made in one bowl.
    2. Perfect for bake sales, lunchboxes, and picnics.
    3. Banana and chocolate chip loaf is a great first bake for kids.
    4. Enjoy with a cup of coffee.
    5. Freezer-friendly.

    🛒 Ingredient notes

Bananas - 2 large over ripe bananas. They should have brown or black peels.

    Butter - unsalted and softened.

Sugars - a mixture of white sugar (caster sugar) and light brown sugar gives the best flavour and texture.

Eggs - 3 large free-range eggs at room temperature.

Vanilla Extract - use a good quality extract and not essence. Swap with ground cinnamon if you can't get hold of vanilla extract.

Flour - self-raising flour already has the raising agent (baking powder) added to it. Alternatively, use plain flour and add baking powder to a ratio of 1 teaspoon of baking powder to every 100g of plain flour.

Chocolate Chips - I like to use a combination of milk chocolate chips and white chocolate chips, but you could also use dark chocolate chips.

🔪 How to make chocolate chip banana bread

The recipe card with ingredient quantities and detailed instructions can be found at the bottom of the post

One: Place the butter and sugars in a large mixing bowl and cream together with a wooden spoon until pale and fluffy.

💡Top Tip - use a stand mixer instead of a mixing bowl and wooden spoon if you prefer.

Two: Beat in the eggs and vanilla extract.

Three: Sift in the flour and fold in gently.

Four: Stir through the mashed banana and chocolate chips.

Step by step photo instructions for making banana bread.

Five: Spoon the banana bread batter into a greased and lined 2lb loaf tin.

Six: Bake in the oven for 1 hour- 1 hour 10 minutes. Test with a skewer - you should have a few small crumbs clinging to the skewer but no raw batter visible. Allow the cake to cool for 10 minutes before removing it from the tin and cutting into slices.

    Top Tips

    • Freeze over ripe bananas in their skins until you are ready to make banana bread. Defrost at room temperature before beginning the recipe.
    • Speed up the ripening process by piercing the banana skins with a fork and microwaving for 30 seconds.
    • Line your loaf tin with non stick parchment paper to prevent the banana bread from sticking to the sides. Leave a 3cm overhang to make it easy to pull and lift the banana bread out of the pan.

    🍴 Serving suggestions

Serve the chocolate chip banana bread as an after-school snack, or pack slices in lunchboxes and picnics.

Banana bread is also a great grab-and-go breakfast option for busy mornings. Or serve it for dessert with a scoop of no-churn honeycomb ice cream and warm creamy custard.

    📖 Variations

Classic chocolate chip banana bread variations!

    • Add a handful of walnuts or pecan nuts to the banana bread for added crunch.
    • Swap the chocolate chips for raisins or dried cranberries.
    • Use dark brown sugar for a richer caramel flavour.
    • Sprinkle extra chocolate chips on top of the banana bread before baking. Or, why not sprinkle the top with cinnamon sugar?
    • Make a double chocolate banana bread and replace 30g of flour with cocoa powder.
    • Make banana chocolate chip muffins! Spoon the batter into 12 muffin cases and reduce the cooking time to 25 minutes.

    🥡 Storage

Store - in an airtight container or cake tin for up to 5 days. Stale slices can be toasted for breakfast and spread with Nutella!

Can you freeze banana bread? The banana bread can be frozen for up to 3 months. Wrap the cooled banana bread in cling film (plastic wrap) or foil to prevent freezer burn. You could also freeze individual slices of banana bread. Pop the individually wrapped slices straight from the freezer into lunchboxes first thing in the morning, and they will be thawed by snack time!

    ❓ Frequently asked questions

Can you put white chocolate chips in banana bread?

Yes! I like to use a combination of white chocolate chips and milk chocolate chips. Dark chocolate chips can also be used, which will be less sweet.

Why is my banana bread not moist?

Measure your ingredients using digital kitchen scales to ensure you use the correct proportion of dry ingredients to wet ingredients.

Can bananas be too ripe for banana bread?

Unless you can see mold on the skins, then no! The blacker the skin the sweeter the flavour!

Really yummy! Although it did require 1hr 30 in the oven at 160fan. The last 20mins covered with foil to prevent too much colour on top.
