Air fryer mummy hot dogs are an easy and fun Halloween snack for kids!

Hot dogs are wrapped in puff pastry strips then air fried until the pastry puffs up and becomes golden brown! Stick on the edible eyes with tomato ketchup and serve in brioche rolls!

My kids and their friends love these mummy dogs for dinner at Halloween. They're also great to serve up for Halloween parties.

So simple to make, but really effective!

✔️ Why you'll love this recipe!

    • Fun Halloween snack idea for kids.
    • Only 5 ingredients!
    • Easy and quick to make in the air fryer.
    • Serve in Brioche rolls with ketchup and mustard for dipping.

    🛒 Ingredient notes

Ingredients for air fryer mummy dogs.

Hot Dogs - use your favourite brand of pre-cooked tinned/jarred hot dogs. Drain and pat the hot dogs dry with a paper towel before using them. Raw sausages wouldn't work in this recipe. Firstly, they might not cook fully in the air fryer in the specified time, and secondly, they will release too much water and fat while cooking making the pastry soggy.

Puff Pastry - use a ready rolled sheet of puff pastry and make sure it has been taken out of the fridge 30 minutes before starting the recipe. This allows the pastry to warm up and prevent it from cracking when unrolled.

Olive Oil Spray - to prevent the mummified hot dogs from sticking to the air fryer basket.

Edible Eyes - use candy eyes (stick them with ketchup) or raisins instead.

Hot Dog Rolls - I like to serve the mummy dogs in brioche hot dog rolls.

    🥄 Equipment

Which air fryer? I use the Ninja Foodi MAX PRO Health Grill, Flat Plate and Air Fryer with 7 customisable cooking functions including grill, flat plate, air fry, roast, bake, reheat and dehydrate! It also comes with a digital cooking probe that precisely monitors your food’s temperature as it cooks!

    What is an air fryer?

Air fryers are small(ish) kitchen appliances that operate like a convection oven—except in a smaller, more concentrated space.

The air is circulated at a high temperature and evenly around the food, which makes the food cook more quickly than in a conventional oven and helps give foods a crispy coating without the need for lots of oil and fat.

    🔪 Instructions

The recipe card with ingredient quantities and detailed instructions can be found at the bottom of the post

One: Preheat the air fryer to 180c (350F).

Two: Unroll the puff pastry and cut it into 1.5cm strips. Wrap the strips in a criss cross pattern around each hot dog, leaving a space at one end for the eyes.

Three: Place in air fryer basket and air fry for 6-8 minutes until the pastry is golden and crispy (you may need to do this in two batches depending on the size of your air fryer).

Four: Stick the edible candy eyes on with a dab of tomato ketchup and serve in the brioche rolls.

    🍴 Serving suggestions

Serve the air fryer mummy hot dogs at your next Halloween party with babybel cheese monsters, Halloween sprinkle cookies, green apple monsters, Halloween bark, and clementine pumpkins!

    📖 Variations

    • Stick the edible eyes on with cream cheese instead of ketchup.
    • Oven bake the mummy dogs instead of air frying. Bake in the oven at 200C for 30 minutes.
    • Swap the puff pastry for pizza dough.
    • Use mini hot dogs for a smaller version.
    • Try different dipping sauces. BBQ sauce, mustard, and sweet chilli sauce all work well.

    🥡 Storage

The mummy dogs are best eaten fresh, straight from the air fryer or oven.

Store: Leftovers should be kept in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Reheat: In the air fryer or hot oven for a few minutes. Microwaving is not recommended. If you will be reheating them, don't attach the edible eyes until after they have been reheated. The mummy dogs can also be eaten at room temperature, so why not pack leftovers in lunchboxes the next day?

Freeze: Allow the mummy dogs to cool completely then freeze for up to 3 months. Air fryer or oven bake from frozen to reheat.

    ❓ Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy edible eyes?

I buy edible candy eyes from Amazon. Large supermarkets often sell them around Halloween too!

Can I make mummy dogs ahead?

Mummy dogs taste best fresh from the air fryer or oven.
