Easy air fryer apple crumble with soft cinnamon Bramley apples and a buttery, chewy flapjack-style oat topping. The apples are softened in the air fryer first, so there's no need to use a saucepan.
700gBramley Apples (or Granny Smiths)unpeeled weight
25gCaster Sugar (Superfine Sugar)
½teaspoonCinnamon
1½tablespoonWater
For the crumble topping
100gPlain Flour (All-purpose Flour)
100gRolled Oats
100gLight Brown Sugar
100gButtermelted
Instructions
Preheat the air fryer to 170°C (320°F) and butter a 1.5 litre baking dish. The shape of the dish can vary depending on the size and shape of your particular air fryer. It's important to note that any dish that is safe to use in an oven can also be used in an air fryer.
Place the flour, oats, and brown sugar in a mixing bowl and stir in the melted butter until crumbles form. Set aside.
100 g Plain Flour (All-purpose Flour), 100 g Rolled Oats, 100 g Light Brown Sugar, 100 g Butter
Peel and thinly slice the apples and place them into the baking dish with the caster sugar, cinnamon, and water. Give it a mix and then air fry for 12-15 minutes until the apples have softened.
700 g Bramley Apples (or Granny Smiths), 25 g Caster Sugar (Superfine Sugar), ½ tsp Cinnamon, 1½ tbsp Water
Sprinkle over the crumble topping and air fry for a further 15-20 minutes until the top is golden and the fruit is bubbling underneath. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
Apples: The 700g (1½ lb) Bramley apple weight is before peeling and coring.
Oats: Use regular rolled or porridge oats rather than jumbo oats. I find jumbo oats don't absorb the melted butter as well.
Cook the apples first: Air fry the apples for 12–15 minutes before adding the topping. This ensures they soften before the crumble becomes too brown.
Crumble texture: This isn't a traditional breadcrumb-style crumble. The melted butter and oats create a chewy, flapjack-like topping.
Air fryer used: I tested this recipe in both my Ninja Foodi Health Grill & Air Fryer 5.7L and my Ninja Foodi FlexDrawer 10.4L with a 1.5-litre ovenproof dish.
Air fryers vary: Check the crumble towards the end of cooking and adjust the time if necessary.
Browning too quickly: Loosely cover the top with foil if needed, ensuring it's securely held down and can't blow towards the heating element.
Storage: Keep leftovers covered in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheat until piping hot.
Freezing: Freeze cooked and cooled crumble for up to 3 months. Defrost in the fridge before reheating.
